Optimal Working Conditions for an International Team
The HI-STEM gGmbH is located at the main building of the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), which has been completely renovated in 2010. Its laboratories provide optimal working conditions and are equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and instruments. HI-STEM groups are typically also affiliated with the DKFZ.
Both parties, DKFZ and HI-STEM, benefit from the outstanding infrastructure and numerous core facilities (such as cytometry and imaging, animal laboratory services, genomics and proteomics) installed at the DKFZ.
Within the Neuenheimer Feld, most Heidelberg University medical departments, and hospitals as well as scientific research institutions such as the Center for Molecular Biology Heidelberg (ZMBH), the National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT), the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research, the Center for Organismal Studies (COS), the Bioquant and other University institutes are located in walking distance to HI-STEM. HI-STEM researchers also collaborate at several levels with colleagues at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg, which is reachable in fifteen minutes by car.
Professor Dr. Otmar Wiestler, former chairman and scientific director of the DKFZ, underscored the importance of modern well equipped working facilities : "To enhance our attractiveness in the worldwide competition for the best minds, we must provide cancer researchers from around the world not only the necessary intellectual freedom and incentives, but also attractive working conditions".
