Role of neural cells in tumor progression is becoming ever more evident. HI-STEM scientists published a landmark study in Nature elucidating the role of neural innervation in promoting the tumor progression in pancreatic cancer and how this cross-talk works. Federal Minister of Health Nina Warken visited DKFZ yesterday. After a warm welcome by Scientific Chair and CEO Prof. Michael Baumann, she also met with Dr. Rene Jackstadt (DKFZ, HI-STEM) to learn about his research on how tumors spread and metastasize in the body.

 

Else Kröner Fresenius Foundation awarded one of this year's Else Kröner Memorial Fellowships to HI-STEM Group Leader Mirco Friedrich. This fellowship provides two years of protected time away from clinical duties to clinician scientists to focus on their research projects. Dr. Friedrich is working on an mRNA-based strategy designed to temporarily empower the immune system, which could help overcome immune decline and enhance health-span in our aging societies.
